Porter HS Band Wins Area Championship, Advances to State
Congratulations to the Porter High School Spartan Band for advancing to the State Marching Contest next week. The band is advancing for the third consecutive time in school history. They performed at Galena Park Oct. 16 and won first place out of 13 bands in the Area Competition.
“This is the first time they won the Area Championship,” said PHS Director Dr. Jimmy Nowell.
This marks only the fourth time in NCISD history that a high school band has advanced to state. Only 32 bands state-wide qualified for the 5A state band competition.
“This particular half-time show seems to be popular with the judges,” said Nowell.
The band received the highest rating by all three judges at the Area Competition.
“The show is called Cloudscapes,” explained Nowell. “The music is indicative of the clouds and sky above and the wind. It is powerful and happy music with lots of velocity.”
The band of 172 students will be led by three student drum majors. Half of the students competing this year went to state two years ago. The band began working on the routine in the summer and slowly incorporated more portions into the halftime shows during each weekly football game.
“We really had to teach half the band how to march this year since the freshmen and sophomores didn’t get to do as much marching the previous two years,” said Nowell. “The kids achieved more than we thought they could. They are already champions in our eyes for what they have done this fall.”
During the last football game of the season this Saturday, the band students will be presented the Area Championship trophy by NCISD Superintendent Matt Calvert and PHS Principal Cesar Condarco.
The State Marching Competition will be held on Monday, November 1, at the Alamodome in San Antonio at 1:15 p.m. Watch the livestream of the upcoming Spartan Band State Competition here.
